OK, OK, it's time for another story post. Problem is that I'm not liking the current part of Shore Leave, and it's going to take more time to fix than I have tonight. Of course, I also skipped posting last week, so I don't want to go with no post at all. Here's the compromise. In a minute I'm going to post a "flash fiction" piece I wrote way back at the beginning of the year for a contest at Escape Pod. "Flash fiction" is a term that generally means really short stories and this particular contest was limited to 300 words or less. The piece did decently in the contest, making it through the first round of voting to a "semi-final" round and it had strong votes in the semi-final. It's an odd piece, I don't quite know what to do with it. I like the setup of the world, although things are naturally very sketchy given only 300 words. It's an unusual piece for me in that I just visualized the character one day, fairly complete, and then never figured out anything to do with the character. I can see his world, and his angst, but there's no real narrative arc to it. I know his problem, but as yet I don't have a solution for him. So he was perfect for this little vignette - a glimpse of the character and his setting, but nothing more.
I will finish Shore Leave, I promise. I just need to get this next bit flowing better.
